The family is good enough for you

The families of the not too distant past is oriented around four axes. These axes are not mutually exclusive. Some committed all of them enhanced each other.

People get married for several reasons:

1. Due to social pressure and social norms (the Social dyad)

2. To form a more efficient or synergetic economic unit (the Economic dyad)

3. In pursuit of psychosexual fulfillment (the dyad Psychosexual)

4. To ensure the company's long-term (Dyad company).

Thus we can speak of the following four areas: economic, social, Emotional, Utilitarian (Rational), the private sector and family.

To illustrate how these axes were intertwined, consider the emotional.

Until recently, people married because they felt very strongly about living alone, partly due to social condemnation of reculsiveness.

In some countries, people still subscribe to ideologies that promote the family as a pillar of society, the basic unit of the national body, a greenhouse in which to raise children for the army, and so on. These ideologies collective call for contributions and personal sacrifices. They have a strong emotional dimension and to give impetus to a series of behaviors patterns.

But the emotional investment in the individualistic-capitalist ideologies is not lower than yesterday's nationalists. It is true that technological advances rendered past thinking obsolete and dysfunctional but quench the thirst not Man for guidance and a worldview.

However, as technology evolved, it became more and more disruptive to the family. The increased mobility, decentralization of information sources, transfers of traditional role of family social establishments and private sector, the increased incidence of interpersonal interactions, safe sex less or consequences no – all fostered the disintegration of the traditional family, extended and nuclear.

Consider the trends that directly affected women, for example:

1. The emergence of common property and civil laws for equitable distribution in divorce is a change in the philosophy of law in most societies. The result was a significant (and ongoing) redistribution of wealth from men to women. Add to this the differences in life expectancy between two sexes and the magnitude of the transfer of economic resources becomes evident.

Women are richer because they live longer than men and therefore because they both inherit and receive a share of marital property when the divorce. These endowments "are usually more than they had contributed to the couple in terms money. Women still earn less than men, for example.

2. An increase in economic opportunities. Social and ethical codes changed, technology allow greater mobility, wars and economic upheavals have led to the forced introduction of women into the labor markets.

3. The result of the influence increased women's economic system is a more egalitarian social and legal. Women's rights are being legally informally, said in an evolutionary process marked by minor legal revolutions.

4. Women have largely achieved equal educational and economic opportunities and are fighting a battle to win in other domains of life (the representation of the military, political). In fact, some legal aspects, the bias is against men. It is rare that a man complains sexual harassment or to receive alimony or custody or, in many countries, being the beneficiary of social welfare payments.

5. The appearance of socially acceptable (normative) single parent families and non-nuclear women helped to shape their lives as they see fit. More single parents are headed by women. parents are economically disadvantaged single women (their average income is very low even when adjusted to reflect transfer payments) – but it many are taking the step.

6. So gradually, the shaping of future generations becomes the exclusive domain of women. Even today, third of all children in developed countries grow in single-parent families with no male figure to serve as a model. This exclusivity has tremendous social and economic implications. Slowly and subtly the balance of power will change the society becomes matriarchal.

7. The invention of the pill contraceptives and other sexually liberated women. The resulting sexual revolution affected both sexes, but the main beneficiaries were women whose sexuality is legitimized suddenly. No more under the cloud of unwanted pregnancy, women felt free to have sex with multiple partners.

8. In the face of this new freedom and the realities of changing sexual behavior, double standards collapsed. The existence of a legitimate female sexual desire is expressed widely accepted. The family, therefore, becomes also a sexual joint venture.

9. Urbanization, communication and transportation increased the number of encounters between men and women and opportunities for economic development, sexual and emotional interactions. For the first time in centuries, women were able to judge and compare their peers to others, every way imaginable. Increasingly, women choose to opt for the relationships they deem to be dysfunctional or inadequate. More than three-quarters of all divorces in the West are initiated by women.

10. The women realized their needs, priorities, preferences, desires and, in general, their emotions appropriately. Cast of emotions and thought patterns inculcated in them by patriarchal societies and cultures and sustained through peer pressure.

11. The roles and traditional family roles are gradually eroded and transferred to other actors. Even functions such as emotional support, psychosexual interaction and parenting are often relegated to the outside "subcontractors."

Gaps in these functions and interactions between the generations, the nuclear family has been reduced to a dysfunctional shell, a center rudimentary communication between its remaining members, one version of what was ruined.

The traditional roles of women and their alleged character, tastes and inclinations were no longer useful in this new environment. This led women to seek a new definition, to find new niche. They were literally driven from their homes by its functional disappearance.

12. In parallel, modern medicine's highest life expectancy of women, extended their period of maternity, improving your health dramatically, and retain their beauty through a myriad newfangled techniques. This gave women a new chance at life.

In this new world, women are much less likely to die during childbirth or to look decrepit at 30 years of age. They are capable of one time decision to bring a child into the world, or refrain from doing so passively or actively (by an abortion).

the increasing control of women over their bodies – that has been objectified, reviled and admired for millennia by men – is arguably one of the most striking features of the female revolution. It allows women to get rid of deeply embedded masculine values, views and prejudices concerning their physique and their sexuality.

13. Finally, the legal system and other social and economic structures have been adapted to reflect many of the major changes mentioned above. Being inertial and cumbersome, they reacted slowly, partially and gradually. However, they did react. Any comparison between the situation of only twenty years ago and today is likely to reveal substantial differences.

But this revolution is only a segment of a much larger.

In the past, the axes with which we opened our discussion were closely and seemingly intractable intertwined. The Economic, Social and Emotional (the axis invested in the preservation of social mores and ideologies) formed an amalgam – and the private, family and utility-rational was another.

Therefore, the company encouraged people to marry, because emotionally committed to a social-economic ideology that gives the family with sanctity, an historical mission and greatness.

Despite the social views of the family, most men and women married a cold financial calculation that regarded the family as economic unit operation in which the individual actually processed. The family formation was the most effective way known to generate wealth, accumulate and transfer it across time and space for future generations.

This confluence of traditional axes were diametrically reversed in recent decades. The social and economic lines with the utility (Rational) axis and the axis aligned emotional with private and family lines.

In short, nowadays society encourages people to marry, because their desire to maximize its economic output. But most people do not see it. They regard the family as a safe emotional haven.

The distinction between past and present may be subtle, but it is not all trivial. In the past, people used to express emotions in ways, ways that are socially dictated, dressed in their beliefs and ideologies on their sleeves so to speak. The family was one of these modes of expression. But in reality, served merely as an economic unit, devoid of any emotional involvement and content.

Today, people are looking for the family for emotional sustenance (romantic love, companionship) and not as a tool to improve their social status and economically. Creating a family and not the way to maximize their utility.

But these new expectations have destabilized the family. Both men and women seek emotional comfort and true partnerships within it and when not available, use your newfound self-sufficiency and liberties and divorce.

In summary:

Men and women use to look for the family for economic and social support. When the family not as a launching pad for economic and social – He lost interest in it and began looking for alternatives outside of marriage. This trend of disintegration was further enhanced by technological innovation, encourages self-reliance and unprecedented social segmentation. It was society at large which regarded families emotionally, as part of the dominant ideology.

The roles are reversed. Society now tends to see the family on a utilitarian-rational light, as an effective way of organizing economic and social activity. And whereas in the past, their family members consider mainly a utilitarian-rational way (like a big production unit) – now want more: the emotional support and company.

In the eyes of the individual, families went from economic production units emotional powers. In the eyes of society, families went from being elements of emotional and spiritual ideology to utilitarian production units-rational.

This shift of axes and emphases is to bridge the traditional gap between men and women. Women had always accentuated the emotional side of being in a couple and the family. Men always emphasized the convenience and utility family. This gap used to be insurmountable. Men act as conservative social agents, women as revolutionaries. What is happening to the institution Today's family is that the revolution is becoming mainstream.
